The LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT, located on the Aix-Schuman and Marseille-Canebière sites of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, organizes foreign language courses (English, German, Spanish and Italian) for LICENCE and MASTER 1 students.

In the curriculum for law students, training in a foreign language is recommended in L1 (optional language), compulsory and validated in L2, L3 and M1. Since the beginning of the school year in September 2020, self-training in English is compulsory at all levels of the licence.

In Master 1, there is also the possibility of taking an introductory course in Spanish or German (on application).

To meet the needs of the Faculty's students, the training focuses on the use of communication tools and the acquisition of legal vocabulary. Using a variety of documents from the media, the teachers deal with the legal and political history and current events of the countries whose main language they teach, with an increasing degree of specialisation until Master 1.

The Language Department is an accredited testing centre for the TOEIC and TOLES exams and organises written and oral evaluation tests in German, Spanish and Italian as part of international exchange programmes (ERASMUS).

  • In L1, all students have a compulsory self-study in English. They can also choose an optional language (bonus) among the four proposed (English, German, Spanish or Italian).
  • In L2, all students have a compulsory self-study in English. They also have to choose a compulsory language for the TD (English, German, Spanish or Italian) and can also choose an optional language as a bonus (different from the compulsory language).
  • In L3, all students have a compulsory self-training in English (first semester only). They also have to choose a compulsory language for the TD (English, German, Spanish or Italian) and can choose an optional language as a bonus (different from the compulsory language).
  • In the second semester, all students follow a lecture in legal English, regardless of the language chosen for the practical sessions.
  • M1 students must choose a compulsory language (English, German, Spanish or Italian) in the laboratory or lecture hall each semester. In the second semester, all M1 students have a law course taught in English, regardless of the language chosen for the lab. Students who do not have knowledge of any of the four languages offered at the post-baccalaureate level may choose an annual introductory course in Spanish or German as a language course (subject to application and availability of places).

On the Aix site, students and staff are welcomed in the LANGUAGE AREA to work independently. They can individually refresh their skills, maintain their competence in one or more foreign languages, take a legal English course and prepare for the TOLES, prepare for a stay abroad, a certification, a language exam or a competitive examination with the help of the resources available or the workshops which take place each semester.

Students and staff of Aix-Marseille University can register at the Espace Langues. Cost of registration: 50€ for one year (30€ or free for scholarship holders depending on the level of the scholarship) and 25€ per semester (15€ for scholarship holders).

On the Marseille site, some workshops are currently offered without registration fees.

The aim of the oral language test at the CRFPA is to assess the candidate's ability to understand a document in English and to speak and discuss it with the jury.

There is no programme. The texts deal with current legal, political and social issues in English-speaking countries. It is possible to prepare for this test at the Espace Langues.

Candidates have 15 minutes to prepare. The oral test lasts 15 minutes (reading, summary, commentary and interview with the jury).

TheTOEIC(Test Of English for International Communication) evaluates English as a vehicle for communication in a professional context.

The Language Department organizes two TOEIC exam sessions each year, in its "Listening and Reading" version. A minimum TOEIC score may be required to apply for a university course (e.g. 785 to apply for an Erasmus stay).

The test, which lasts 2 hours, consists of 200 questions (MCQs):

  • First part: listening comprehension (with audio support): 45 mn (100 questions)
  • Second part: reading comprehension : 75 mn (100 questions)

You will find information on the various TOEIC sessions on the intranet (section Education/Language Department).
