Presentation of the event

Meeting as part of the cycle "Acting in times of crisis, 2023 edition" with the participation of Patrick Caron, Director of the Institute for Advanced Knowledge on Transitions in Montpellier, President of Agropolis International, and François Moreau, Director of the Urban Ecology Agency of the City of Paris.

The "Acting in times of crisis" cycle

Convinced of the importance of fostering the impact of SHS research on society, the Institut d'études avancées de Paris and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes-PSL have been working together since 2019 to design meetings and debates on topical issues aimed at engaging a wide audience. Whether they focus on bioethics (2019), or on crises and how to respond to them (2021, 2022 and 2023), these cycles are concrete examples of action taken to decompartmentalize research.

Over the last few decades, crisis management has become an almost routine and unavoidable part of our societies, while warnings about crises are multiplying. How can we act, when the usual models and systems of action are destabilized by the upheavals and the often profound and lasting disruptions that they induce? This question is both scientific and political.

Presentation of the meeting

Population growth, the impact of the food industry and contemporary food behaviors on the climate and the planet, and climate change, to name but a few of the factors at play, force us to actively reflect on a transition in terms of the food system. The question is not independent of many other issues, and is particularly acute in urban areas. It must also be considered in both the North and the South.

The first steps towards this transition have been taken, but they are encountering various obstacles. How can we involve actors at different levels of the sector, from farmers to consumers? What experiences can we draw on to make this necessary transition?
