Asia through the prism of maritime history - Hybrid conference June 11 and 12, 2024 - UFR LLSHS - Lorient

Online 04 06 2024

Announcement 1165283

The aim of this symposium is to pay tribute to the work of three recently deceased historians (Philippe Haudrère, André Lespagnol and Sylviane Llinares), who devoted a significant part of their work to maritime history and the East India Company, and more generally to the French presence in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific in the modern era. The colloquium will take stock of their respective contributions to these themes, through the participation of researchers and doctoral students who have collaborated with them. It also aims to take stock of current research in maritime history on a variety of themes, from navigation to piracy, the circulation of objects, the condition of goods destined for Breton ports, logistics adapted to distant navigations, the routes used, and so on. It aims to demonstrate the fruitfulness of a maritime history in dialogue with other disciplinary fields such as urban history, economic history and art history. This symposium has chosen to focus on Asia and the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the common ground of recent research by Philippe Haudrère, André Lespagnol and Sylviane Llinares.
