This call for papers focuses on the spread of diseases aboard ships and their impact on ports between the 16th and 20th centuries. This one-day conference is an opportunity to take a fresh look at diseases on board and on land, linked by the phenomenon of embarkation. How are sanitary measures and patients managed in secondary ports with no quarantine facilities, but affected by waves of epidemics circulating in coastal shipping? How do ports, where some squadrons land with hundreds of sick requiring hospitalization, isolation and care, manage the arrival of these large flows? How does illness shape shipboard space when crew members need to be isolated and cared for? These questions are by no means exhaustive, and open the way to many others.
