1 Brief description of the scheme (sources - FMSH website)

At the heart of contemporary change, the arts and sciences embody a crucial capacity for collective invention. By creating spaces for dialogue between the human and social sciences and the arts, this call for projects aims to encourage innovative approaches that explore these transformations, stimulate critical thinking and open up new perspectives for understanding and action.

The call for projects aims to support partnership teams working on projects that reflect on societal issues in all their forms of expression. It encourages collaborative research that offers innovative ways of contributing to public debate and decision-making. It is aimed at researchers in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences who develop projects in partnership with players in the artistic and cultural worlds. These cross-disciplinary relationships foster the development of practices and methodologies, and the creation of new knowledge to document social phenomena. Researchers and players in the artistic and cultural worlds have a crucial role to play in experimenting with new ideas and in collective reflection on societal issues, as well as in disseminating the knowledge produced.

Projects may fall into one of the following indicative areas, which are not limited to other themes:

  • International circulation of works and objects, actors and knowledge
  • Artistic creations and representations in scientific knowledge
  • Stakes of the living and heritage arts in authoritarian and illiberal regimes
  • Representation and questioning of social norms through artistic practices

In 2025, particular attention will be paid to projects dealing with the complex issue of the "restitution" of works and, more generally, the circulation of cultural goods on a global scale. All the dimensions of this "international relationship" - whether cultural, diplomatic or legal - and all the meanings that can be given to it can be explored. Dialogue with communities and civil society organizations, heritage institutions and public authorities is particularly welcome.

Projects, supported over a 3-year period, will receive funding of between €15,000 and €30,000.

The call, open to all humanities and social sciences themes, is part of the Arts program of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, and is developed in partnership with the Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian, delegation in France.
