The LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT, located on the Aix-Schuman and Marseille-Canebière sites of the Faculty of Law and Political Science, organizes foreign language courses (English, German, Spanish and Italian) for LICENCE and MASTER 1 students.
In Master 1, students can also take an introductory course in Spanish or German (by application).
To meet the needs of the Faculty's students, the course focuses on the use of communication tools and the acquisition of legal vocabulary. Drawing on a wide range of media documents, teachers cover the legal and political history and current affairs of the countries whose main language they teach, with an increasing degree of specialization up to Master 1.
The Languages Department is an accredited testing center for TOEIC and TOLES, and organizes written and oral assessment tests in German, Spanish and Italian as part of international exchange programs (ERASMUS).
- In L1, in the first semester you must choose a compulsory language for the TD (English, German, Spanish or Italian).
In the second semester, you can also choose an optional language (bonus) from the five on offer (English, German, Spanish, Italian and Chinese). All students also have a compulsory English self-study (assessed).
- In L2, you must choose a compulsory language in TD (English, German, Spanish or Italian) and can also choose an optional bonus language (different from the compulsory language).
- In L3, you must choose a compulsory language (English, German, Spanish or Italian) and may also choose an optional bonus language (different from the compulsory language).
In the second semester, all students take a lecture in legal English, regardless of which language they choose for their seminars.
- M1 students are required to choose a compulsory language for the year (English, German, Spanish, Italian or Chinese) in a seminar or lab each semester. In the first semester, all M1 students have a law course taught in English, irrespective of the language chosen for the lab. Students with no knowledge of any of the four languages on offer at post-baccalaureate level may choose an introductory course in Spanish or German as their language TD (subject to application and space availability).

On the Aix site, students and staff are welcome to work independently in the ESPACE LANGUES. They can take individual refresher courses, maintain their skills in one or more foreign languages, take a course in legal English and prepare for the TOLES exam, prepare for a stay abroad, a certification, a language exam or a competitive examination, using the resources available or the workshops held each semester.
Students and staff of Aix-Marseille University can register at the Espace Langues. Cost of registration: 50€ for one year (30€ or free for scholarship holders, depending on scholarship level) and 25€ per semester (15€ for scholarship holders).
On the Marseille site, a few workshops are currently offered free of charge.
The aim of the oral language test at the CRFPA is to assess the candidate's ability to understand a document in English, to speak about it and to hold a discussion with the jury.
There is no syllabus. The texts deal with current legal, political and social issues in English-speaking countries. You can prepare for this exam at Espace Langues.
Candidates have 15 minutes to prepare. The oral test lasts 15 minutes (reading, summary, commentary and interview with the jury).
The TOEIC (Test Of English for International Communication) evaluates English as a means of communication in a professional context.
The Language Department organizes two TOEIC exam sessions each year, in its "Listening and Reading" version. A minimum TOEIC score may be required to apply for a university course (e.g. 785 to apply for an Erasmus stay).
The 2-hour test consists of 200 multiple-choice questions:
- First part: listening comprehension (with audio support): 45 min (100 questions)
- Second part: reading comprehension : 75 mn (100 questions)
Information on the TOEIC sessions can be found on the intranet (under "School/Language Department").
