This colloquium is part of the reflections on peace studies in the French-speaking world, which have been neglected for too long. In this perspective, a regional/continental approach centered on Africa seemed appropriate, not to perpetuate a discourse too often ordered around the prism of violence, war and mal-development, but rather to emphasize the extent to which the African continent can be the bearer of real peace dynamics, post-conflict experiences and research into the conditions for a peace that is not simply the absence of war, but rather, in the sense given by J. Galtung, social harmony and socio-economic development for all.

Still often considered in terms of peace-building, peace-keeping or peace-making (although these approaches are not negligible), peace in Africa can thus give other meanings to the concept of peace and reveal other practices, other modes of operation, by enabling a broader dialogue between civil society, the academic field and even the political field. This holistic perspective on the concept of peace thus lies at the crossroads of several disciplines (political science, law, history, anthropology, sociology, etc.), which together can provide a better understanding of this concept and, above all, its effectiveness and diverse realities, while being aware of obstacles and hindrances of all kinds.
