1 Summary description of the system (sources - ecophytopic.fr website)

Scheme description

The aim of the Ecophyto 2030 strategy is to reduce the use, dependence, risks and impacts of plant protection products by supporting stakeholders through the process of change. The Ministries of Ecological Transition, Agriculture, Health, Higher Education and Research, and the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB) are launching a call for expressions of interest in research and innovation as part of axis 4 "research, innovation and training" of the Ecophyto 2030 strategy. This call for expressions of interest, with a planned budget of 3.5 million euros, is financed by funds from the diffuse pollution levy earmarked for the Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB) to support Ecophyto actions.

The aim of this call for expressions of interest (AMI) is to evaluate and highlight the values of preventive actions not using plant protection products (PPPs), compared with the values of curative actions (using PPPs) in agriculture, at relevant spatial and temporal scales, and to identify the technical, social and economic obstacles to their implementation, as well as their genericity or specificity.

Two lines of research are explored by this AMI

  • How can we assess the values (agronomic, economic, environmental, social, etc.) of situations involving preventive crop protection actions not using PPPs, compared with the values of situations involving curative actions using synthetic chemistry? Which metrics, which tools, which data in a multi-criteria cost-benefit approach?
  • How is preventive action (i.e. without recourse to PPPs) accepted by farmers and other players in value chains, and how can it be made more acceptable? What are the obstacles and levers to their deployment?
These questions should be based on concrete situations and levers whose agronomic and/or technical, economic, etc. effectiveness has already been tried and tested, or even measured. The specific features of these situations and the associated preventive actions will need to be explained, while taking care to highlight as far as possible aspects of the results that can be transposed beyond specific cases, particularly in terms of methodology, metrics and indicators.
This call for expressions of interest in research-innovation and research-action is aimed at multidisciplinary scientific communities. The aim is to pursue ongoing or existing work aimed at exploring in depth the issues involved in implementing prophylactic measures.
