In 2026, the Canal du Midi will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Commemorating this anniversary provides an opportunity—drawing on the Canal du Midi’s 350-year history and the ways in which it has reinvented itself—to broaden the discussion to include canals, from the past to the present, on a global scale. The goal of this conference is to identify lessons that can help address the challenges of the future—environmental, social, and economic—by comparing canals, their similarities and differences, and their past and future trajectories.
