Presentation of the event

This roundtable, in English, will bring together eminent specialists to reflect on and reconsider the role of government in economic life.

The time is right: policymakers in Washington, Brussels, and elsewhere are launching bold new experiments in industrial policy. The principles of the "Washington Consensus" are increasingly falling out of favor, both politically and ideologically. Academics and journalists are observing the decline of "neoliberal globalization" and a "return" to domestic industry and the relocation of supply chains. Activists, workers and citizens are calling for greater action by governments to ensure a prosperous, sustainable and equitable future.

The conversation will focus on precisely what state-based neoliberalism has meant over the past few decades and whether we are experiencing significant breaks from this paradigm. It will discuss how neoliberalism, as an ideology and practice, has impacted the way scholars and policymakers think and act, and what might constitute new progressive directions.
