At the confluence of new scientific and medical techniques and evolving social norms, bioethicists are striving to develop frameworks for novel practices and entities. In so doing, they are developing normativity. What are their sources? What processes should be adopted to develop these normative frameworks? Taking the field of reproduction as a case study, this conference will examine how various forms of knowledge and expertise come into play in the formulation of ethical norms applied to biomedicine. Assisted reproduction techniques (AMP or PMA) are transforming human procreation, providing new concrete and symbolic possibilities for family ties. At the same time, on a scientific level, these techniques have led to the development of a field of research focusing on the human embryo. In view of the multiplicity of actors and the multiplicity of issues at stake, we'll be looking at ways of integrating diverse voices and perspectives into bioethics, in their particular cultural anchors, drawing in particular on qualitative studies in the social sciences.
