The " Cetaceans seen by the law " symposium, to be held in Nice on May 23, 2025, offers a multidisciplinary reflection on the place of cetaceans at the crossroads of the legal, human and natural sciences, notably in collaboration with the Observatoire québécois du droit animalier and the Nice DU de Droit de l'animal. From the legendary imaginary that surrounds them to their role in entertainment practices, from the threats to their survival to the legal battles they inspire, the cause of cetaceans mobilizes our understanding of normative frameworks and social representations. Issues as diverse as captivity-related litigation, the challenges of ecotourism, regulations governing hunting and accidental fishing - notably through an analysis of Scandinavian law - and the personification of these species in constitutional law will be explored. Anchored in the unique setting of the Côte d'Azur, where a wealth of marine biodiversity is combined with tensions between conservation and human use, this event will bring together jurists, researchers and practitioners to shed light on the necessary changes in public policy and the way cetaceans are viewed, in the service of sustainable preservation of their ocean ecosystems.
