The study day proposes a reflection on civil status, on its uses and its evolutions, by taking for focus transidentity which has become a major place of its questioning. The question of the change of the mention of sex in the civil status has been the object of numerous claims from trans people who have contested the heaviness of the judicial procedure as well as its medicalization. These challenges received a legislative response on the occasion of the 2016 law on the modernization of justice in the 21st century, which demedicalized the procedure without, however, diverting it from the courts. The study day will revisit these developments and will address the relationship between civil status and transidentity by crossing legal, anthropological and sociological approaches in order to grasp the multiple issues at stake.
