Organized by the Réseau Thématique "Normes, déviances et réactions sociales" of the Association Française de Sociologie (AFS) with the CeRIES laboratory of the University of Lille, in partnership with the IUT Carrières sociales of the University of Lille, the Centre de recherche sur les sociétés et environnements en Méditerranées (CRESEM) of the UPVD and the Association des chercheurs des organismes de la formation et de l'intervention sociales (ACOFIS).
The noun "enfermement" designates both an action, that of enclosing, and the result of this action, the fact of being enclosed. For the purposes of this symposium, we propose to look beyond the establishments that are at the forefront of confinement, and consider the various more subtle and less radical forms that confinement takes in other institutional and spatial contexts. The aim is not to limit the notion to what is covered by the concepts of discipline and total institution, but to apprehend confinement in its multiple facets and with regard to its different scales of intensity.
