This first edition of the Cycle de conférences sur les études postcoloniales depuis l'Amérique latine -conducted in collaboration with the Département des langues- was born of a particular concern: what does it mean to engage with Latin American thought from France? In an article that also serves as a position paper, historian Serge Gruzinski attempts an answer: France is a place where it is possible to seek a new conception of the relationship between Europe and America, far removed from the reductions that certain intellectual traditions - notably American postcolonial studies - have made of Latin America.
