Called upon to identify and legally articulate the source of power, constituents and political actors have come to realize just how much the question of the seat of sovereignty—given its stakes and implications—serves as a major focal point for the crystallization and revelation of political and cultural identities. Constitutional fictions have long been employed to sidestep this issue. Comparative constitutional history bears witness to these difficulties and, consequently, to the diversity of discursive or normative frameworks devised to address them: as illustrated during this symposium by the cases of Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and Italy.
