Presentation of the event

This study day will be devoted to the study of the different ways in which cultures approach difficult decision making. By their very nature, rules cannot anticipate all eventualities, and there are inevitably situations in which the application of a rule or standard procedure is not obvious.

How do individuals and institutions deal with such situations and find an acceptable solution? This question refers to several key concepts of groupthink: the role of casuistry, responsibility in decision-making, the possible tensions between formalist procedures on the one hand, and the need to find fair solutions to cases of conflict on the other.

The objective of this day is to determine the range of possible approaches to such problems, and explanations for cultural similarities where they appear. The reference to individuals and institutions is intended to lead participants to reflect on the continuum between individual choices and those made by groups within formal institutions. Does greater institutional accountability lead to different approaches to decision making? Do individuals imitate or use institutional methods of decision-making in their own lives?
