Empires of widely varying natures have all nonetheless been confronted with religious diversity and have responded to it in different ways, from the attempted imposition of religious monotheism (the Spanish Empire) to the maintenance and management of that diversity (in the Ottoman Empire, for example). The question of the hierarchy of religions by the Europeans is essential here, which establishes a scale of value, from paganism - animism and shamanism as well as Buddhism and ancestor worship - to monotheisms. Faced with an impossible synthesis, the challenge of the study day is to propose several avenues of reflection around the axis of "empire", in a period that goes from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century, thus allowing for a dialogue with historiographies of the modern period as well as the postcolonial period.
