Bureaucracy etymologically refers to the power of offices, but in the field of the history of political ideas, it refers to a vast array of critiques, as much political as legal, social or economic. This colloquium will look back at how the concept of bureaucracy has been used historically by protestors, examining what constitutes an anarchist critique of bureaucracy, its possible extension to periods other than contemporary history, and the objects targeted by these critiques (State, administrations, even companies or any other institution). Considering these critiques from the perspective of anarchist studies invites us to better understand institutions in the light of their contestations, in order to learn more about what bureaucracy says about the state, society and individuals.
