This symposium is devoted to the role played by the religious factor in Mediterranean geopolitics. It concludes the multidisciplinary research of the Collège des Bernardins seminar "Geopolitics and religions around the Mediterranean: between permanence and recomposition".
The Mediterranean, an intercontinental sea surrounded by land, was the heart of the Roman world and the cradle of monotheistic religions. Today, it is the scene of migration due to war, climate change and poverty, which seems to predestine it to conflicts of civilization and interest. Despite this, it has always been a crossroads of cultures and cooperation. The symposium explores the value of a millennia-old religious heritage in understanding today's challenges. It examines how the many religions and societies around the Mediterranean influence strategic balances. With the end of Western Christian domination, new regional players are emerging, such as Turkey, Egypt, the Gulf States, the Maghreb and Israel, affecting the cohabitation of peoples and the pluralism of societies. The Mediterranean is now a strategic point of passage in contemporary geopolitics, with its recurring conflicts and its dialogue ventures.
