The Sahel, described as an "arc of crisis" in the French Republic's 2008 White Paper, is a region often reduced, in media, political and scientific discourse, to a succession of crises (political, economic, religious, food-related, etc.). This focus on crises, amplified by the inaccessibility of the terrain and a distant scientific output, obscures the complexity of local social, historical and cultural dynamics. To balance the dominant discourse, we need to diversify disciplinary approaches (anthropology, history, linguistics) and increase the number of places where knowledge is produced.
