This multidisciplinary colloquium aims to examine fictional and non-fictional representations and discourses on air travel, from both scholarly and popular cultures, to understand how aeronautical travel is caught between an inexhaustible poetics of the sky and contemptuous, disillusioned discourses. It seems necessary to take a close look at aerial imaginaries, to try and understand how air travel has come to be the subject of such polarized affects and value judgments: at first synonymous with grandeur, success, glory, even the divinization of humanity, how has it come to refer us today to a form of failure or collective threat?
