The Atlas of Innovative Sports serves as an observatory of sports at various geographic scales. As a tool for analyzing the world of sports and the dynamics shaping it—without claiming to be exhaustive—it brings together numerous contributions from researchers in geography and sociology, as well as in anthropology, law, economics, history, political science, geopolitics, information and communication sciences, sports science, as well as experts in digital and dynamic cartography. Going beyond a simple inventory and the strict study of competitive sports, it adopts a multidisciplinary approach that combines complementary perspectives to understand and represent sports cultures, issues related to sports, and the ways in which these are spatialized. As a cross-disciplinary initiative focused on cartographic development and the dissemination of scientific knowledge to a broader (non-academic) audience, it draws inspiration from previous research and publications but aims to be an innovative project that leverages a variety of materials, explores a wide range of themes and questions, and fosters scientific and public discourse.
