This issue of Agora débats/jeunesses explores this instability dating back to the 18th century, when childhood and youth emerged as distinct but not yet established phases. It examines age-related policies—legal thresholds, administrative categories, and medical knowledge—that define and reshape these boundaries. It also analyzes the experiences of young people, which often diverge from institutional norms, through the lens of youth cultures and intergenerational relationships.
