Against a backdrop of water scarcity and growing political awareness of climate change and its effects, this dissertation examines changes in water management practices in the Western Pyrenees since the 1950s, as well as the challenges associated with recognizing this traditional knowledge. Drawing on an approach situated at the intersection of environmental history and ethnology, it analyzes inherited irrigation practices and traditional ecological knowledge associated with mountain socio-hydrosystems. The project aims to study the processes of erosion, transmission, and revival of these practices through the dynamics of their designation as cultural heritage, in the face of agricultural changes, land-use planning policies, and new climate adaptation policies.
