In 2025, the German Historical Institute (IHA) will award the eleventh Franco-German History Prize for Master's theses.
Award framework (summary)
The Franco-German History Prize for Master's theses is endowed with €500. The winner will be invited to Paris for the official presentation of the prize at IHA's annual conference. Travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed. Essential aspects of the work may be published, after positive external evaluation, in the form of a scientific article in the IHA journal "Francia. Forschungen zur westeuropäischen Geschichte".
Eligibility (summary)
The competition is open to students who have defended their Master 2 dissertation (or equivalent, e.g. Staatsexamen admission dissertation) between January 1 and December 31, 2024, in history or a history-related discipline at an institution of higher education in France or Germany, and who have been awarded the distinction "bien" or "très bien" (in France, 14/20 or above). For work defended at a German institution, the thesis must focus on a moment in French history.
Conversely, for work submitted to a French school, the dissertation must focus on German history. In both cases, the dissertation may also focus on Franco-German history. The period studied may range from late antiquity to the present day.
Candidates' nationality is not taken into account.
