1 General framework of the prize

The RRA, Réseau de recherche sur le racisme et l'antisémitisme, is renewing its thesis prize, the "Prix Jeanne Hersch", in honor of the woman who, in her article "Sur la notion de race" (Revue Diogène, n°59/1967), drew a clear distinction between "Hitlerite racism" of extermination and "colonialist racism" of exploitation. This prize will be awarded to a thesis that contributes to a broader analysis of the phenomena of racism or anti-Semitism, and to an understanding of their specific logics.

To help promote research on racism and anti-Semitism, as well as on the fight against these phenomena, the Réseau de recherche sur le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme (RRA) associated with the Institut Jonathas, Centre d'études et d'action contre l'antisémitisme (Brussels), awards a biennial thesis prize, across all disciplines, to reward innovative research in the French language.

The fields of study are deliberately very broad. The works rewarded, mainly doctoral theses, can of course address racism and anti-Semitism through the prism of their various fields of study and themes (such as, for example, the city, justice, work, education, school, inter-ethnic conflicts, psychology, the media, etc.).

2 Application requirements

Candidates must have defended their thesis and been awarded the title of doctor in one of the two calendar years preceding that of the award ceremony, i.e. between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2025. Theses must be written in French.

An endowment of 4,000 euros will be awarded to the winner.
