Long considered a marginal practice of naval warfare, privateering nevertheless occupies a central place in the history of international relations, armed conflicts, and the regulation of violence. At the intersection of naval warfare, the maritime economy, and diplomacy, it served, from antiquity through the 19th century, as a major strategic tool for weakening rival powers, particularly in the context of colonial and imperial rivalries from the 16th to the 19th centuries. This conference aims to explore privateering from a diachronic and interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on history, law, political science, geopolitics, and strategic studies.
