The Fondation pour la mémoire de l'esclavage awards an annual prize for a thesis. The prize, worth a total of €7,000 (seven thousand euros), is awarded for an innovative French-language doctoral thesis that contributes to a better understanding of human trafficking, slavery systems, abolition processes and contemporary legacies in post-slavery societies, from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, from the end of the 15th century to the present day.

Half of the sum is paid to the prizewinner when his or her name is announced, and the other half is conditional on the thesis being published by a recognized publisher, in return for a number of copies to be supplied free of charge to the Foundation, and will be paid on presentation of a publishing contract or an official document attesting to a promise of publication.

Self-publishing is excluded from this provision.

Theses in any discipline, completed and defended or accepted between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2024, whether at a French or foreign university, are eligible for the prize provided they meet all the following conditions:

  • Thesis written entirely in French;
  • Subject corresponding to the criteria ;
  • Thesis must be written entirely in French;
  • Complete application sent on time to the Fondation pour la mémoire de l'esclavage, as specified in the following articles.

Theses may be submitted in one or more disciplines in the human and social sciences: history, law, political science, economics, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, literature, art history, philosophy, etc.

The prize is awarded by the President of the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l'esclavage at an official ceremony.
