The French Revolution has long been considered the matrix of all revolutions. Having "flooded its shores" with a dynamic that was "salutary and fruitful among the blessings of men", its principles and majesty inflected the destinies of neighboring peoples. What's more, for Michelet, 1789 made France the "vessel of humanity", the guide for all peoples in their quest for emancipation and freedom. In this paradigm, subsequent foreign revolutions stemmed from a unique global message delivered in France, the homeland of human rights and, as such, the beacon of humanity.
