This resolutely multidisciplinary call for papers for a study day aims to bring together research that shares a common focus on the social uses of sound. Our approach aims to analyze how sounds are composite objects that become issues of struggle. It also aims to show how a form of distortion necessarily imposes itself when we study sound environments, due to our scientific methodologies of investigation and collection, but also to the techniques of production and dissemination of sound materials. This distortion precisely reflects the varied uses to which sound is constantly put.
