    In the first year, the History of Law and Institutions specialization is designed to teach students all the subjects covered by the discipline (history of private and public law, history of political and legal thought, history of institutions). Cross-disciplinary courses in public and private law are also taught, as well as an introductory course in Latin and archivistics.

    In the second year, the History of Law and Political Ideas course includes :

    - An introductory research option: "Études approfondies en histoire du droit et des idées politiques", for students intending to pursue a doctorate, teaching and research careers, or civil service entrance examinations.

    - A professional option: "Memory and Heritage Professions", designed to train future professionals in heritage conservation, museums, archives, libraries, cultural mediation, etc.

  • TARGETED STUDENTS

    &Students from law faculties or an IEP or students who have followed a compatible course (history, philosophy, double degree in law and literature, law and art history) at other French or foreign institutions.

  • ADMISSION CONDITIONS

    This course is open to students as of the first year of their Master's degree.

    Access is subject to the submission of an application.

  • STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION

    In the first year, the History of Law and Institutions specialization covers all the subjects in the discipline, and in the second year specializes in research or professional studies.

    1st year: 450 h of training :

    - 8 24h subjects, in 1st and 2nd semesters

    - 1 TD in History of Political and Legal Thought in S1

    - 1 TD in the history of justice and administration in S2

    - 24h foreign language TD in 1st semester

    - a 24-hour English language course in the 2nd semester.

  • KNOWLEDGE TO BE ACQUIRED

    1st year:

    - Core subjects: History of property, obligations, justice, political ideas, administrative law, legal thought, health and social law, tax law.

    - Cross-disciplinary subjects: students can choose from a wide range of subjects: Matrimonial property law, Inheritance law, Civil service law, Local authority law, Literary and artistic property law, History of international relations, Law of creative and digital professions.


    2nd year: Based on a common core of disciplinary teaching, the History of Law and Political Ideas course offers students two distinct options:

    - A generalist option geared towards research and teaching in the history of law, or competitive entrance exams for the civil service

    - The other, more specifically geared towards professional careers in memory and heritage conservation.
