The journal *Educational Engineering: Perspectives on Research and Innovation* is dedicating its next issue to the integration of generative artificial intelligence systems into instructional design. These systems are not simply added to the instructional design process as an additional tool: they are integrated into each of its stages and provide the designer with what they were tasked with designing. The issue calls for research that takes instructional design seriously as a methodological discipline and artificial intelligence seriously as a social phenomenon.
