Since 2005, a prize has been awarded for a thesis in the social and human sciences on the history of the slave trade, slavery and its abolition during the colonial era, or on its consequences in today's world. Created by the Comité national pour la mémoire de l'esclavage, since 2020 this prize has been awarded by the Fondation pour la mémoire de l'esclavage, on the decision of a jury made up of members of the foundation's Scientific Council.

Summary of the scheme for 2024

1 This year, the Fondation pour la mémoire de l'esclavage wishes to pay tribute to Jean-Pierre Sainton (1955-2023), Guadeloupean historian and driving force behind its Scientific Council, who passed away in the summer of 2023, by renaming its 2024 thesis prize the "Jean-Pierre Sainton Prize". A major author on the history of the Caribbean and social struggles in overseas France, and creator of the Masters in Heritage History in Martinique and in Human and Social Sciences in Guadeloupe, Jean-Pierre Sainton was an active contributor to the Foundation's Scientific Advisory Board.

In renaming the thesis prize for this 2024 edition, the Foundation wishes to pay tribute to his curiosity and sense of sharing and transmission.

The FME Thesis Prize includes:

  • 7,000€ including publishing support,
  • production of a short video on the thesis,
  • participation in the Foundation's scientific events.

2 Theses submitted may be in one or more disciplines in the humanities and social sciences: history, law, political science, economics, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, literature, art history, philosophy, etc.

3 Candidates must have defended their thesis between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023.
