  The socioeconomic and environmental impacts of Canada’s extractive industries, their international ramifications, and the challenges they face in the midst of a systemic environmental crisis justify the French Association for Canadian Studies (AFEC) dedicating its 50th conference to this issue. During this conference, we will examine the logic of extraction from various perspectives in order to foster dialogue among the disciplines represented within the AFEC. We will seek to understand the extent to which the dynamics of extraction—from the forestry industry to the exploitation of fossil fuels—have transformed not only ways of life but also the diverse expectations and concerns of contemporary Canadian society.

It aims to continue working toward conceptualizing security, sharing practitioners’ experiences, and serving as a source of proposals—a strategic compass for decision-makers.   As part of the preparations for its quadrennial conference to be held in 2028 on forest administration to mark the bicentennial of the 1827 Forest Code, the French Forest History Group wishes to focus, during its annual study day, on the legislative, regulatory, and administrative legacy developed and established in France up to the French Revolution. This legacy is often perceived as a uniform, organized, and centralized whole in 18th-century France. By encouraging a variety of approaches to the founding texts, their legal sources, their authors, and their silvicultural knowledge—and, finally, to the people who applied them within central and local institutions— this legal and administrative landscape should emerge as surprisingly more complex, mirroring the many facets of France’s forests and the country’s institutional history.
