1 General framework of the scheme

Since 2005, a prize has been awarded for a thesis in the social and human sciences on the history of the slave trade, slavery and its abolition during the colonial era, or on its consequences in the world today. Created by the National Committee for the Remembrance of Slavery, this prize has been awarded since 2020 by the Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery, upon the decision of a jury composed of members of the Foundation's scientific council.

2 Summary of eligibility conditions

Article 1 of the regulations

The Foundation for the Memory of Slavery awards an annual prize for a thesis. This prize, with a total endowment of €7,000 (seven thousand euros), rewards a doctoral thesis in French of an innovative nature, which contributes to a better understanding of the human slave trade, slavery systems, abolition processes and the establishment of post-slavery societies from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean, from the end of the 15th century until their contemporary consequences.

Theses from different disciplines, completed and defended or accepted between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022, whether in a French or foreign university, are eligible for the prize provided they meet all of the following conditions:

  • Thesis written entirely in French;
  • Subject corresponding to the criteria ;
  • Respect of the defense dates;
  • Complete file sent in time to the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l'esclavage

Article 2 of the rules

The theses submitted may be in one or several disciplines in the field of human and social sciences: history, law, political science, economics, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, literature, art history, philosophy, etc.
