Do emotions undermine democracy, as is often thought? Or do intense emotions, on the contrary, have an important political function, particularly in democratic regimes? It seems that emotions can build and sustain democracies, but also threaten or even destroy them. This series of round-table discussions addresses the ambivalent role of emotional manifestations in contemporary democracies. Through four historical case studies, it extends a current of research that is currently making waves in Germany and France: the history of emotions.

The German Historical Institute (IHA) is a research center of the public Max-Weber Foundation - Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland. We work under the motto "Research-Mediation-Qualification" in the field of French, Franco-German and West European history - from Late Antiquity to the present day - and play a leading role in mediating between Germany and France. Digital history and sub-Saharan Africa are complementary areas of research.
