(Calenda announcement 1179307)
The theft of cultural heritage and the creation of artistic booty have always accompanied invasions and colonizations. This international colloquium aims to gain a better understanding of the processes of restitution of objects, whether completed or not, in international relations in contemporary times. Expected contributions will focus on four areas of research: firstly, geopolitics, focusing on the analysis of negotiations and bi/multilateral norms linked to restitution issues; secondly, politics, focusing on the impact of social, militant and political movements, as well as of 'root communities', on decisions concerning restitution; the third area will examine restitution as a moment of international cultural interaction (representations of cultural property, consequences of spoliations on root communities, reconciliation issues). Finally, the last section will examine the role of social and legal sciences, as well as museums and universities, in restitution negotiations. Contributions are due by October 1, 2024.
