  The socioeconomic and environmental impacts of Canada’s extractive industries, their international ramifications, and the challenges they face in the midst of a systemic environmental crisis justify the French Association for Canadian Studies (AFEC) dedicating its 50th conference to this issue.   The Parliament of Paris is one of the largest producers of archives from the medieval period, and the diversity of the parties and disputes brought before the court has fueled research far beyond the history of medieval justice and procedure alone, opening up new perspectives in political, economic, social, and cultural history. This conference has a twofold objective. On the one hand, it aims to bring together researchers from various disciplines who are currently working on or with the Parliament’s collection and to encourage them to discuss new research perspectives that may emerge from renewed access to the archives. Second, the conference aims to take stock of the use of the numerous research tools that have been gradually developed and to consider which ones should be developed in the future.

By calling for contributions from academics, senior military officers, and risk management practitioners, this volume is not merely intended to describe security crises. It aims to continue working toward conceptualizing security, sharing practitioners’ experiences, and serving as a source of proposals—a strategic compass for decision-makers. As the saying goes, “To govern is to foresee.”
