Presentation
This year's seminar retains its formula of text analysis. Devoted to questions relating to political modernity under the Ancien Régime, it will deal with current issues during sessions of reflection on bodies of sources that raise methodological and interpretive problems.
Research presented on the basis of archival fonds and printed documentation will focus primarily on the perspectives of monarchical power and dynastic permanence. The work focuses on a number of themes, addressing the local uses of royal power and the monarchical principles underlying its implementation.
Between political theories and the exploitation of the royal domain, jurisconsults and practical documents, the seminar first aims to understand the way in which the territorial basis of power feeds or clashes with the evolution of doctrine. Text-reading sessions will be combined with other, more specific interventions on the construction of a so-called "modern" state, captured through the production of its sources, in particular military legislation and its historiographical reconstruction. Mainly focused on the 16th-18th century, in a constant dialogue between historians and jurists, the seminar will also be open to other fields of research.
